Research Note Description:
Directed graphical models are called
Bayesian networks
or
Belief Networks
. In general terms we can say - Bayesian Networks are a model for representing uncertainty in our knowledge. This uncertainty arises in a variety of situations such as:
uncertainty in the experts themselves concerning their own knowledge,
uncertainty in the knowledge engineer trying to translate the knowledge, and
uncertainty about the actual availability of knowledge.
